Teaching

Since 2004, I have trained planning students in the UK and in France and also taught planning to geographers, architects and engineers. In both countries the teaching cohorts included home and overseas students which  has provided me with experience of addressing the challenges of very diverse students, with distinct learning skills, cultures and expectations. I am currently one of the 6 planning academics delivering our RTPI accredited MSc in Urban and Regional Planning recruiting ~80 students each year, with 25 to 40% of the cohort being international.  I do understand and have direct experience of RTPI accreditation requirements.

I have been involved in teaching 10 different modules since joining UoB and have redesigned two MSc modules and two UG modules.  I include transferable skills in learning outcomes, both in terms of knowledge acquired (practitioners delivering lectures and to practice group exercises completed in the field) and skills gained using innovative  assessment (e.g. dragons’ den panel and ‘call for tender’ type assessment).

The quality of my teaching was recognised by a teaching prize in 2012 as well as through excellent student feedback (overall scores over 4.5/5). My teaching is research-led and includes traditional lectures, group discussions, site visits and fieldtrips, practitioners seminars and student-led presentations. I typically use my ESRC SAPER project to challenge the students about the values and role given to urban planning and how this transfers into the physical design of cities, in South Africa (during and post-apartheid). I then demonstrate what this means with regard to balancing contrasting interests, differential power relationships, severe spatial and social segregations and what are the key challenges for transforming urban spaces in the future.
