I've had the pleasure to supervise a range of doctoral researches in the area of urban studies as well as economic and political geography.

  1. Ritu George Kaliade (2020-) Place attachment among new skilled international migrants in German peripheral cities (Second supervisor with Robbert Knippschild, TU Dresden)
  2. Paul Moawad (2018-) Deconstructing the Lebanese-Syrian borderscape through waiting and temporality. A comparative study on Syrian refugee informal settlements in Lebanon along the borderline  (Primary Supervisor with Mike Raco)
  3. Haixia Hu (2017-)  The internationalisation of British independent schools (Second Supervisor with John Bryson, University of Birmingham)
  4. Hikmah Kamarudin (2015-2019) Physical Access for Disabled People to the City Centre Public Realm: The Case of Kuala Lumpur (Sponsored by the Malaysian Government) (Second Supervisor with Rosie Day) – viva completed – thesis being revised (13 February 2020)

  1. Deyala Altarawneh(2013-2017) Therapeutic landscape & temporary uses in derelict spaces in Jordan (Sponsored by the University of Jordan) (with Phil Jones & Jessica Pykett). 
  • Deyala subsequently secured a tenured Assistant Professorship at the University of Jordan.
  • Bin Lin(2012-2017) Urban Regeneration in Guangzhou, China(Li Siguang Scholarship) (with Phil Jones and Vlad Mykhnenko). 
    • Bin subsequently secured a post-doctoral position at Peking University Shenzhen Campus
  • Nuruljanna Zhaina Albidin(2012-2016) Sustainable cities in Malaysia (Sponsored by the Malaysian Government) (with Phil Jones).
    • Janna subsequently secured a temporary teaching post at the University of Birmingham.
  • Chloe Billing(2013-2016) Satellites, rockets and services: a place for Space in geography? (1+3 ESRC Studentship) (with John Bryson)
    • Chloe subsequently secured a research fellow post at the University of Birmingham.
  • Collins Adjei Mensah(2012-2015) Sustaining urban green spaces in Africa: a case study of Kumasi metropolis, Ghana (Sponsored by Ghanaian Government) (with Mike Beazley)
    • Collins subsequently secured a permanent lectureship at the University of Cape Coast (Ghana)
  • Daniel Smith(2009-2014) Planning for sustainable neighbourhoods in European cities (EPSRC Scholarship) (with Austin Barber)
    • Daniel set up his own consultancy business
  • Pei-Ling Liao(2009 -2014) Cultural and creative clusters in Asian cities – the case of Taipei (Taiwan) (with Caroline Chapain)
    • Pei Ling subsequently secured a research fellow post at the University of the West of England
